Our adventure in Thailand took an exciting turn after another delightful night at our hotel in Bangkok. It was time to pack our bags for the trip to Koh Samet. After a breakfast, we gathered our belongings and took a taxi to Bangkok’s Ekkamai bus station. There, we took a bus bound for the Ban Phe harbour, setting off on what would be a memorable four-hour journey.
The bus ride, however, did not live up to our expectations. The air conditioning was set to what felt like sub-zero temperatures, transforming our comfortable ride into a rather chilly ordeal. Despite the unwelcome cold, the experience was an adventure in its own right.
Upon our arrival in Ban Phe, Noi expertly handled the arrangements for a speedboat ride to the island. The speedboat journey was a thrilling highlight, cutting through the waves and offering us a refreshing contrast to the bus’s icy interior. In just over 20 minutes, we reached the shores of Koh Samet and were on our way to our resort by a local pickup taxi.
Our accommodation was a charming cottage with a picturesque view, embodying the cozy and authentic vibe of the island. The day’s travel, coupled with the bus’s excessive air conditioning, took its toll on us, leaving both Noi and me feeling under the weather. While Noi took a rest in bed, I found solace in a warm cup of coffee at the resort, taking in the serene surroundings.
Dinner at the resort, unfortunately, did not meet our expectations. The meal was somewhat disappointing, and the high prices added to our discontent. We decided that the following day, we would venture out in search of local eateries, hoping for a more authentic and satisfying dining experience.
The night was challenging for Noi, who had caught a cold, and for me, sleep was elusive. I spent much of the night on the veranda, immersed in the tranquil darkness and the symphony of tropical sounds. This unexpected moment of quiet reflection amidst the backdrop of the night was a unique experience, providing a sense of calm and belonging.
Despite the initial setbacks, our first day on Koh Samet was filled with moments of discovery and introspection. As we looked forward to exploring more of the island, we were reminded of the journey’s unpredictable nature and the lessons and experiences it brings.
